A little help, when you need it
Let’s get you sorted.
Practical guides for setting up your family and getting the most from Zamily.
18 guides available
Start a family on Android
Set up your account, create a family, and get ready to share.
- Install Zamily from Google Play and create your account.
- Follow the in-app permission setup. Allow location while using the app and, for family updates when the app is closed, allow location all the time. Choose notification permission if you want alerts.
- Create a family in the app. You can share its invite link or code with an adult you trust.
- Open the map to check your own location and family members who have joined. A saved place can be added later for arrivals and family plans.
Android may put background location and battery settings on separate system screens. Check the app permission status after returning to Zamily.
Join with a family invite
Use the family code, then wait for an admin to approve your request.
- Ask a current family member to share the invite link or current family code from More, then Family.
- Install Zamily, create or sign in to your own account, and open the invite on your Android phone. You can also enter the code in the Join a family flow.
- Submit your join request. Entering a code does not immediately give you access; a family admin must approve it.
- If the code has expired, ask the family for its newly generated code. Do not keep retrying an old code.
A family invite is for joining the primary family. Connected households use a different, one-use sharing code.
Set up a child’s phone
A parent or guardian creates a one-time child setup code.
- In your own family, open More, then Family, and choose Add a child.
- Read and confirm the parent or guardian consent disclosure before creating the child account.
- Enter the one-time setup code on the child’s Android phone in the child setup flow. This is not the ordinary family invite code.
- Check the child phone’s location and notification permissions, then confirm the child appears in the family map.
Keep setup codes private. If a child changes phones, use the app’s code reissue flow rather than sharing an old code.
Find Family plans
Journeys, pickups and one-time alerts have their own space.
- On the map, open Family plans with the calendar button below Messages. You can also reach it from More.
- Choose On my way to share a journey to a saved place, Pickups to coordinate a collection, or Let me know for one arrival or departure alert.
- When starting a journey, choose a saved place, travel mode and when it should end.
- Open the active item to mark an arrival, complete a pickup or cancel a plan when it changes.
The arrival estimate is rough and may be unavailable when the latest location is old. It is not turn-by-turn navigation.
Ask for a pickup
Let family know where to collect you and who has accepted.
- Open Family plans, then Pickups, and choose your current location or a saved place.
- Add a short note such as a meeting point and choose when the request expires.
- Send the request. A family adult can accept it; the family can see who is collecting you.
- The collector can share a driving or walking journey. Mark arrival and completion in the app, or cancel if plans change.
Current-location requests require a recent shared position. If it is unavailable, choose a saved place or restore location sharing first.
Get one place alert
Ask for one arrival or departure notification, with an expiry.
- Save the place in Zamily if it is not already in your family’s places.
- Open Family plans, then Let me know. Choose a family member, the place, and Arrive or Leave.
- Set the expiry and create the alert. Check Your active alerts to cancel it early.
The alert reacts to a fresh place transition after you create it. An old location or a paused member will not trigger a historical alert.
Connect separate households
Share only selected people with another household by consent.
- An adult opens Connected households and selects the people they are allowed to share.
- Choose how long access should last, create a one-use code, and send it privately to an adult in the other household.
- That adult enters the code in Connect to another household. They can then see only the selected members.
- Use Manage access to remove a grant or revoke an unused code early.
Your primary family stays the same. An adult shares their own location; a family admin can also share a child in their care. Other adults decide for themselves.
Name, save and replay trips
Keep useful trips and understand missing route sections.
- Open Driving, then choose a recorded trip.
- Give the trip a useful title, mark yourself as driver or passenger, or save it as a favourite for quick access.
- Open replay to move through the recorded route. A blank section represents missing position samples; it does not prove the path taken between them.
- If a trip is missing or short, check the phone’s location permissions and connectivity before relying on the route as a complete record.
Trip history and favourites remain subject to the limits shown for your plan.
Why has the map position not moved?
A correct stationary marker can be older than the phone’s latest contact.
- Check whether the person has actually moved. Zamily can use fewer GPS fixes while a phone is stationary or at a saved place to conserve battery.
- Check the member’s latest contact and battery information. A battery update can show that the phone is still communicating even when its map position remains the same.
- If the marker is in the wrong place after travel, open Zamily on that phone and check location permission, device location, connectivity and any in-app warning.
- If new updates still do not arrive, use the Contact page and include the phone model, Android version and approximate time it stopped.
An unchanged GPS point alone does not establish that a person or phone is offline.
Fix a connection warning
Check the phone network before changing family membership.
- Check that the phone can load a normal web page over mobile data or Wi-Fi, then reopen Zamily.
- If a VPN, Tailscale, ad-blocking VPN or Android Private DNS is enabled, temporarily disable it and retry. A misconfigured route or DNS setting can prevent Zamily from reaching its API.
- Return to Zamily and check whether the family and map load. If turning a network setting off fixes it, repair that setting before re-enabling it.
- If the warning persists on both mobile data and Wi-Fi, contact support with the exact warning text, phone model and when it began.
Do not leave a VPN off if you need it for other work; this is a diagnostic step to isolate the connection.
Check Android tracking permissions
Keep normal background sharing working on your phone.
- Open Android Settings, Apps, Zamily, Permissions. Confirm precise location access and Allow all the time for background family sharing.
- Check that device Location is on. Allow notifications if you want place, pickup and message alerts.
- Return to Zamily’s permission screen and follow any battery optimisation prompt shown for your device.
- After a system update, phone migration or permission change, open Zamily once and verify the map and status before depending on alerts.
Activity recognition and nearby Wi-Fi can help the app recognise movement or saved places, but your Android version may present them differently.
Control access and your account
Review family sharing, temporary links and deletion options.
- Use the app’s sharing controls to pause your position when you need privacy. A paused position is hidden from temporary links and connected households.
- Review active temporary links and connected-household grants; stop or remove access you no longer want.
- To delete your account, use Profile, then Delete account, or follow the request steps at zamily.app/remove-account.
- For a question about access or data, use the contact form at zamily.app/contact or email support@zamily.app.
Share invite codes and live links only with people you trust. Account deletion has effects on family membership and trip history; read the confirmation carefully.
Use Family SOS
A deliberate family alert, with a three-second hold to help prevent accidental taps.
- Open Safety in the app and read the SOS instructions.
- Hold the SOS button for three seconds to send your family an alert with your shared position.
- Use the emergency-call shortcut or call your local emergency number directly when you need emergency services.
- Check phone permissions and connectivity. Family alerts require a working connection and enabled notifications.
Zamily does not provide emergency dispatch, crash detection or roadside assistance. SOS is not muted by Quiet Hours.
Child curfew and supervision context
Choose home-time reminders and understand what nearby family location can tell you.
- A family admin opens the child profile and checks the Curfew settings available for their plan.
- Choose the saved home place, expected time and days, then review the reminder settings before enabling them.
- Keep the relevant phones sharing accurate locations. Zamily can use a nearby adult family member’s shared position as supervision context to reduce unnecessary alerts.
- If an alert or supervision state looks wrong, check location freshness and contact your family directly.
Location-based supervision is an estimate, not proof that a child is safe or physically with an adult. Curfew reminders depend on current locations, permissions and connectivity.
Understand travelling-together groups
Family members travelling together can share one group marker on the map.
- Open the family map while family members are sharing their locations.
- When positions and movement support a shared journey, Zamily can group the travellers on the map.
- Open the group to see the people in it and inspect an individual member when needed.
- Treat the group as location context. Nearby positions do not prove that people are in the same vehicle.
Grouping uses the existing location updates. It does not start an extra background GPS loop.
Saved places, alerts and Quiet Hours
Choose useful places and reduce routine alerts at times that suit your family.
- Open Places in the app and choose the location and name for a saved place.
- For a circular place, choose a radius from 50 to 500 metres. A wider boundary can help with uncertain indoor positions.
- Free accounts include four saved places. Additional places and Quiet Hours depend on the plan shown in the app.
- Review routine notification settings in More. Quiet Hours can reduce routine alerts; SOS alerts are not muted.
Arrival and departure alerts need a new location transition. An older recorded position is not an exact arrival time.
Free, founding-family and iPhone plans
Understand current access, future pricing and how to hear about the iPhone release.
- Free accounts retain the family map, four saved places and seven days of trip history.
- The first 2,000 eligible families receive Premium during the founding programme. Eligibility and current plan features are shown in the app.
- When paid plans launch, founding families have 60 days to decide. The price is shown in the store before you choose; this website has no checkout.
- Android is available now. For iPhone coming soon, open iPhone updates from the website footer and choose whether to request a launch notification.
Android purchases and subscriptions are managed through Google Play when available. No iPhone release date has been announced.
